The Sri Lankan Sea Speaks To You

E.E.Cummings said, “… it's always our self we find in the sea.” That must be the reason everyone chooses to go to the sea for a break - from life, work, and everything that tires people out. The blue of the water calms you and speaks to you in a language only you understand - it’s such a close-knit tie. And the sea speaks a different language with everyone who goes to it.

The music of the waves and the rhythm of the sand beneath your feet and the cool sea breeze caressing your face - just that thought brings joy and gives a sense of relief. You come home from the ocean with a happiness that can’t be explained - but it will be visible in the tan of your skin, and the broad infectious smile on your face. You will keep going back to the sea for more.

No one can get enough of the sea, and you can never pick one that you’ll like more than the others. But the coast of the Indian Ocean that lies in Sri Lanka has a charm of its own. It’s coast is vast and most of the resorts there face the ocean. The ocean is beautiful but this particular coast is wild - each wave has a life of its own. This also makes swimming in the ocean impossible.

Sri Lanka as a place has so many places to explore - it is famous for its forts, churches, monuments, statues, etc. It’s known for its spices - at a spice garden you will encounter smells of cinnamon, pepper and all the spices you can think of - the aroma will stay with you even after you leave the garden.

But everywhere you go in Sri Lanka, the sea will always be with you. Its sound and its smell will follow you and guide you like a friend, like someone you’ve known and someone who will always be there to go back to. You can do all the touristy things that most people do. But in the evening make sure to go back to the sea. Sit there, and see the sun’s light play with the water before it bids adieu for the night. As you see the sun submerge in the sea, you’ll felt lighter. You’ll realise that this happens everyday, even in the city you live in. So how come you never stop and watch the sun set on the city skyline?

The sea will remind you of the beauty of sunsets. And that you need to admire it more often - it will help you calm down. This realisation could have happened anywhere and any day - that’s what you’ll say? But that’s true of most realisations in life. So no, it has to happen in Sri Lanka, right there on one of its beaches, and in exactly that moment, you’ll know.

And these realisations can be as small as these. So that’s what your conversation with the sea can be about - the setting sun and how its beauty moved you. So go build your story in Sri Lanka and make friends with its sea. Book your next holiday in Sri Lanka. You can choose from KK Beach, Kahanda Kanda in Galle, and Mövenpick Hotel in Colombo.
